Your wedding dress appointment should be exciting, comfortable, and all about finding the dress that makes you feel like a bride. The good news? You do not need to overthink what to wear to your appointment at J. Andrew’s Bridal.

Here are a few simple things that can help you feel comfortable and get the most out of your appointment.

What to Wear Under Wedding Dresses

Keep it simple!

You do not need to wear a bra to your appointment. Wedding gowns are designed with built-in structure and support, and we also have specialty bras available in the store if your stylist feels one would help with a particular gown.

We recommend wearing nude or neutral underwear that you feel comfortable in. Seamless underwear can be helpful with fitted gowns, but there is no need to purchase anything special before your appointment.

If you already know you plan to wear shapewear on your wedding day, you are welcome to bring it, but it is absolutely not required. Your stylist will help you see how each gown is designed to fit and support you.

Bring Your Wedding Shoes If Height Matters

You do not need to have your wedding shoes picked out before shopping for your dress. However, if you are especially tall or petite, bring the shoes or heel height you expect to wear on your wedding day.

This helps your stylist determine whether we should consider ordering your gown with a special length. Getting this right when your gown is ordered can make a big difference later.

If height is not a concern, simply wear comfortable shoes that are easy to take on and off.

Wear Something Comfortable

You will be changing in and out of several wedding dresses, so come in something that makes that easy.

Leggings, shorts, a skirt, a comfortable dress, or a simple top are all great options. There is no need to dress up for us. Come comfortable and ready to have fun.

Keep Jewelry Simple

,Large necklaces, bracelets, or dangling earrings can catch on lace, beading, and delicate fabrics. Keeping your jewelry simple makes changing between gowns easier and helps you focus on how each dress looks.

And yes, your engagement ring is always welcome!

Bring Your Inspiration

Save photos of wedding dresses you love before your appointment. They don't have to be dresses we carry. Your stylist can use those photos to understand what catches your eye and then guide you through our collection.

You can also take our Style Quiz before your appointment if you aren't sure where to begin.

But don't worry about having your wedding dress style completely figured out. That's what we're here for.

Bring an Open Mind

This may be the most important thing you bring.

It's completely normal to walk into your appointment thinking you want one style and fall in love with something completely different. Your stylist will listen to what you love, learn what makes you feel confident, and may introduce you to a few gowns you wouldn't have chosen from the hanger.

With more than 500 wedding dresses to explore and an experienced bridal stylist guiding you, you don't have to figure it all out on your own.

What About Hair and Makeup?

Come however you feel most like yourself. You can absolutely wear makeup, but we recommend avoiding heavy self-tanner or products that could easily transfer onto the gowns.

If you're thinking about wearing your hair up for your wedding, bring a hair tie or clip. Seeing a gown with your hair both up and down can help you appreciate different necklines and back details.

What Should Your Guests Wear?

Your guests don't need to dress up either! We want everyone to feel comfortable and ready to celebrate with you.

More important than what they wear is who you bring. Choose the people who know you, support you, and will help you feel confident in your decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to wear a bra to wedding dress shopping?

No! Wedding dresses have built-in structure and support, so a bra is not necessary. We also have specialty bras available at J. Andrew’s Bridal if your stylist feels one would be helpful with a particular gown.

What underwear should I wear?

Nude or neutral underwear is a great choice. Seamless underwear can be helpful when trying fitted gowns, but there is no need to buy anything special for your appointment.

Should I bring my wedding shoes?

If you are tall or petite, we recommend bringing the shoes you plan to wear or a shoe with a similar heel height. This allows your stylist to determine whether a special-length gown may be the best option for you.

Otherwise, comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off are perfect.

Should I wear shapewear?

Only if you want to. If you already know you plan to wear shapewear on your wedding day, you're welcome to bring it. It is not necessary for your bridal appointment.

Can I wear makeup?

Absolutely. Come feeling like yourself! We simply recommend avoiding heavy self-tanner or makeup that could easily transfer onto the gowns.

What should I avoid wearing?

Avoid bulky jewelry or anything that could snag delicate fabrics. Other than that, don't stress about your outfit. We're much more interested in helping you find the wedding dress you love than what you wear when you walk through the door.
